If you obtain a video from YouTube it will likely have the .FLV file extension and be a Flash Video File. Did you wonder what program should open it? Or maybe someone emailed you an FLV file but you're not sure how to use it. Here, we will share the FLV file extension details and tips with you.

What is FLV?

A file with the FLV file extension is a Flash Video file. The Flash Video format is a video format defined by Adobe Systems. Flash Video is the standard video format used by nearly all embedded video on the Internet including the videos found on YouTube, Google Video, and many more websites.

The FLV format is an open format that is also supported by non-Adobe/Macromedia programs. FLV files may be exported from QuickTime Pro or other applications that can export to the QuickTime file format.

How to Play a FLV file?

Many programs open and play FLV files since it's a popular video/audio compression format. Adobe's Flash Player (version 7 and later) supports playing FLV files as well as RealPlayer, VLC, MPlayer, and other popular media players.

Note: For Windows users who wish to use Media Player Classic to play FLV files easily, you should download the necessary files and codecs associated with FLV.

Why Convert FLV files?

Many online videos are in a Flash video format, also known as a .FLV file. These files require a Flash player if you want to watch them on your computer or mobile device and many media devices don't support Flash. Once you've got the Flash video downloaded, you'll probably want to edit the FLV files with an editing program(like, say, FCP, iMovie) to make these videos more stylish, but only to find that they just gray out...

Obviously, it is indeed necessary to convert FLV to a more common video format like MP4 with the help of the conversion software. There are many converters available- Brorsoft Video Converter is what we recommend here. This video convert app is fairly straightforward to use - you can simply import a file, choose a preset (and customize the settings if required), then export a decent format(MP4, AVI, WMV, MOV, MKV...) you need. This professional video converter also has additional features such as batch processing options, built-in editors(cropping, trimming, watermarking, adding subtitles), free software upgrades. If you are on Mac OS X, please get Video Converter for Mac.
